My son found some old ammo and bought it, for 5 bucks. Federal Cartridge Corp., Minneapolis Minnesota. Batch # A46B 10 M 38A. Just curious when they were made, they look old.

I know nothing about the pistol ammo, but Federal sold shotshells under the Monark name in the 50s and 60s.
Also, the box looks quite similar to CIL (Canadian Industries Limited) boxes. They used to sell "obselete" ammo (30/40, 22 Hi Power, like that)here in the states. MAYBE they also made modern stuff, and Federal imported it under their name. Maybe. Just a theory.

Wadcutters, late '60s would be my estimation. Very nice, and a bargain too!

Hello red...38 wadd cutters was what I was hit with in the bar in 76...from your picture I can find only the following...hope it helps....
- box looks like it has a sort of diagonal perforated top you can use...like cigarette? to Flip open top..? That design only introduced by Federal in 62 and later.....
- Federal Monark 22 rim I found pretty good dating/marking site, but not for center fire...but found that Federal Center fire metallic cartridges can be dated at least as to when first available etc....also, Federal sold Monark 22's early as 1941....also, empty boxes like you have selling on Ebay for $10. Plus per box...shoot ammo if you want but take care of box...
- Ammo box markings of " keep out of hands/away from children etc " introduced/made mandatory 62 and later...

Red I used Federal "Monarch" 38 spell. flush wadcutters in my S&W model 52, many years ago. It was actually a very accurate ammo for matches and my mod 52 would only shoot flush wadcutters as nothing else would fit in the magazine. It and my S&W mod. 41, 22 LR are without a doubt the two most accurate pistols (out of the box) that I ever owned or shot. I believe I still have some of the 22 LR ammo as well and will check and send pics if I find it. But as I said, the Monarch 38 special ammo was very accurate. Sounds like your son did well what with being able to shoot the ammo and see the box.
