We are having sign-ups for Baseball. My team last year was abysmal. We finished 2-8, but weren't that good. We had 5 D.O.s last year, that means designated out. Only 7 out of 12 players got a hit, and three only had one each. The worst hitting team ever, one of the worst defensive teams as well.It might have been my worst team ever, and I've coached (many questioned whether what I did last year was actually coaching) over a hundred teams in my 'career'. It was a very difficult season, with very few highlights. We should be better, I'm not sure we can be worse, but I won't say it out loud because we have the capacity for great ignominy. We are that untalented.
To be honest, except for my #1 asst coach (we work very well together), the other'coaches weren't much help.

Heck Red. With all that you describe, your team managed to WIN TWO games last season.
My Highschool team lost every game for almost three years. It was ugly. They barely had enough men to form a team by the beginning of the third year. Still, we attended every game, home & away. We knew that sooner or later, the 'streak' would break, and one Friday night, it did, against a team even more hapless than ours. The streak was broken.
Next week. . . yep they lost, and lost every game for the remainder of the season. But we/they didn't talk about the games lost, we talked of the game won.

Google is no help What the heck is a Designated Out? I made it up. It's a kid that will be out whenever they come up. We had 5 kids who never got a hit. There were 12 players last year. We had 5 kids who never got a hit. Three kids had 1 total, two had 2, and two had 3 hits. There is only three outs an inning. Our batting average for the season was .078, that's 78 hits for every 1000 at bats.

I found one Little League rule, where it said that if the baseman has the ball and is waiting to tag you out, and you do not attempt to avoid being tagged, by swerving around him or sliding, you were automatically out. Wondered if that could be it. Hit a slow grounder down the first base line, and the first baseman runs down and grabs it, eight feet away from the bag, and instead of running back to the bag for the force, he just stands there waiting, and you make no attempt to avoid him. OUT - whether he tags you or not. www.scn.org/ncll/rules.htmlRule 7.08 - Runner Is Out 7.08 (a) (3) - Slide or Avoid Little League - Runner is out if no attempt made to slide or get around fielder with ball waiting to make tag

We had our first practice Tuesday. Our second one is today. We have 7 returning players from the Fall and one from the Spring. I have three new players, two girls and a boy. They are very inexperienced. We look to be better than last year, we'll see. I am cautiously optimistic.

I have never felt so useless as yesterdays practice. Two coaches showed up yesterday, Craig (pitching coach, #1 asst) was ill. Of the coaches who showed, one is older and less 'spry' as I am, so the other one hit infield/outfield defense the whole practice. I cannot hit, throw, catch, run. Useless, totally useless. I am letting the kids down, I am in a quandary. I have asked several people to help me, none have the time. We usually hit (two or three different ways), pitch, catch, play defense, run bases, etc. I have had four others who are 'commited' but only three have shown, on a different times.
I am open to suggestions.
