Recently I found myself having dinner with an American. A decent and friendly guy, Ex Green Beret. He asked me the question, 'what was my handgun of choice? ' I loved that he asked, and loved that he understood. So, I thought it might be nice to ask members, what and why?
I will go first, given a choice I would like a single action auto, like the Browning Hi Power in .40 S&W. I like the calibre, thinking it a good compromise between the 9mm (Get more rounds in the magazine) and stopping power (Better than the 9mm, though not as good as a .45acp). The single action because its what I was trained with and have used a fair bit. I also like the manual safety. (If you ever get a grabber you will too). In condition one, you know what you have, you know where you are.
So, what about you, what and why?

Well, as I was trained with revolvers, I like my double action (first round) semi auto. I carry it daily, in urban environments. If I'm going into the field, I will carry either my .357 Dan Wesson or the .44 Magnum Dan Wesson, revolvers. That way I know what the first round is going to require in trigger control.
Since I reload, I stick with the 9mm in the Ruger semi auto. I installed a slightly heavier spring in the action to take care of the increased recoil and the gun is already rated for +P+ ammunition.
I did carry a 1917 US Marine revolver for a number of years, but I was in areas where a shoulder holster was practical and socially acceptable.

If I carry, it is my NAA Shorty, 22short. I would only use in close quarters and as a last resort. At my weight and girth, and lack of mobility, I am not going to win a gun battle.
At home is my Mod. 31 S&W 32 revolver. I am adequate with it and semi-confidant.

At home is my Mod. 31 S&W 32 revolver. I am adequate with it and semi-confidant. I carry my .40 semi auto. If I was ever able to obtain one, I would carry a small frame 1911 in .45 of course.

40 S&W DAO or S&W 4506, depending upon the environment.

Well, lately I been carrying this one. I replaced the flat, plastic mainspring housing with an arched aluminum one. The scratches on it are from where I am in the process of "melting" it. Once I get it the way I want it, I bead-blast it, and all those uglies go away. I tote that because it's easy to carry and hide. But if I had my druthers, and concealability was not an issue, it'd be my five-inch 625 in 45 ACP. I just shoot them Smith double actions better.

For daily carry, Smith & Wesson 640-3, stainless .357 Magnum 2" barrel. For target work, I like 1911 .45; and even though I'm rationing .22LR, I still love my Smith & Wesson 422.

Hey pinecone. I remember trying the 422. Not easy to impress someone who learned some of the basics on a 41, but it was great. light and handy and shot well.

I enjoy the 422, it's the one I used in competition and for the qualifying target in my concealed carry test. It shoots well even when I'm nervously shooting in front of a group.

I once fired a series under the watchful eye of the founder of the modern technique. I knew him and we got on, but I was still nervous. Perhaps its a good thing for both of us, after all, over confidence can easily lead to mistakes. Alpo, got to say I like and would feel very comfortable with your Colt 1911A1. I especially love the beavertail and light hammer. I agree a flat mainspring housing is preferable and I would swap the rear sight for one of those low ramp jobs. Less likely to hang up on clothing.

I don't like the flat, especially on that gun. This is a full-size gun in my hand. This one happens to be an AMT Hardballer frame I built, back in the 80s, with a GI parts kit, and a shaved (narrowed) Gold Cup trigger, with a Colt Ace top-half. My dedicated 1911 22. Now, here's the Compact, as it came from the factory with the flat housing. Actually painful to shoot. Dug into my hand on every shot. I even gave it away, one time. My solution to guns that are too small - give them to my daughter. She has smaller hands. But she could not work the slide (got a strong spring in them little 3" guns), so I took it back and give her a Beretta 96. Putting the curved housing on it means it does not stab me. At least, not as much.

Two North American Arms Black Widows and a NAA Pug, all in 22 Mag. They will get the job done.

At this time I have my Springfield XD (not xdm) in 45 auto backed up by my S&W Airweight in 38 spl. Sometimes my 1911, also in 45acp, sometimes my Beretta 92fs 9mm as main. Backups include Ruger Security Six (357/38). Also have a Bersa 380cc. Among others. 😉
