I love that fighter, many do. A most elegant aircraft, that helped us stop the Nazis when we stood against them alone. Though the Hurricane shouldn't be forgotten.
The Spits .303 machine guns did a fair job, but once they added a couple of 20mm cannons they just 'disassembled' enemy fighters. At risk of making you jealous, we often see Spitfires over our house. We are close to Duxford Imperial War Museum Airfield, and they often fly around the area. You can actually go up in one. Half an hour is about the equivalent of $4000.00 US. Pretty pricy, but they cost a lot to maintain. Dont think I hadn't toyed with the idea. I mean, once in a lifetime....

My favorite WWII airplane was the P-38 Lighting. During the later days of the War, we had an Army wife staying with us, because her husband was stationed at the little Army post at the edge of town. At the age of 5 years, I got to talk with him a bit when he was allowed off post. Early March, 1944, he asked me what I would like for my birthday. I answered "A P-38!" The next time he visited, he gave me one. Pops

Oh, that P38. Post war ones were designated P1, no idea why. I used a couple here and there. Cant say I liked them very much. I seem to remember when taking them down to clean there were two recoil springs, either side of the slide. Or did I dream that?
Having said that, I think those who dislike the heel mag release haven't always given them a fair chance. I used several handguns with them and given a couple of hours practice you soon get quite slick with them.

You did not dream it. I have a P1, and like it fine. And yes - two recoil springs. Funky. I don't know why people don't like the heel-clip. Guess it's just - "AIN'T AMURICAN!!! Them dang furiners use them. Us Amuricans use that good old button. If it's good enuff fer a Colt 45, it's good enuff fer us." I've got heel-clips on my Colt Ms my Ortgies my Ruger 22s the P1 and the HK PSP I actually like it better than the others. It pushes INTO the grip, while all the others push back away from the grip. Works better.
