I've heard this question argued before, and it's surprising how many different opinions pop up.
For home defense purposes, what size shot do you prefer and consider the most effective? The majority usually seem to favor 00 buck for that purpose, but I disagree. It's true that 00 may give you a bit more effective range overall, but at home defense distances, say, 20 feet or so, that really isn't a relevant advantage in my opinion. In addition, 00 tends to penetrate too much, especially through plaster board, non-structural walls. Personally, I prefer #4 buck. With that load, you get far more pellets but lose nothing in terms of hitting and knock-down power. I keep my 12 gauge Mossy 500 loaded with four #4 shells first out the tube, backed up by two 00, and finally by a slug round.
Opinions? Comments?

Mossy? Really? You also got a Norc or a Spinger, or maybe a Deagle? Mossy. I agree with #4. In my Remington or my Ithaca.

I think Pistols choice is an excellent one, one I might have chosen myself. I believe your No4 is the same is our AAA, which I rated highly, loaded often and think is too often overlooked in favour of 00.

Would 36 12-grain balls do more hurt than 21 21-grain balls? Not sure I would want to find out. I suspect at the sort of close range your using such loads, not much of a difference. Both would have considerable energy while both being soft lead will have less penetration. Good to stop ricochets and over penetration.

The mass power would be the same as both are an ounce traveling at ~1250fps. However each pellet would have either more or less penetration, detirmined by the weight of hte individual pellet.

Pops Pops...just curious here...but when you get down to "each pellets penetration " etc....would not the "mass" factor(s) of what it happens to strike affect an individual pellets penetration...unless of course you reference a controlled target surface ?

If you shoot someone with a 1-ounce load of table salt, with 5000 0.088-grain projectiles, it will not do as much damage as shooting them with a 1-ounce load of AAA, with 36 12-grain projectiles, and neither will do as much damage as a 1-ounce slug, with 1 437.5-grain projectile.
They are all one-ounce loads, but penetration and damage depends on the mass of the individual piece. If you are at any type of range. I believe that an ounce of salt, striking you at one-inch from the muzzle, would probably do much the same damage as an ounce of #4s. And an ounce of #9s would probably do much the same damage, at that distance, as an ounce-slug.

You are correct, ishot, but, in the case where both sets of pellets are lead, weight is a more easily understood difference than mass. (The only PI I really like is apple. ) Alpo explains it quite well, above. Pops

I have read that at typical home defense distances #6 shot is also effective. JR
