Attachment DeletedThis is a picture of my mother when she was a teenager in the 1940s, Winnipeg River in Ontario, Canada. Just look at the size of those fish! Mom would have turned 84 today. I had the great privilege of seeing some of those monster fish while I was growing up but I'm told the real trophy sizes are fished out now.

Those are northern pike (we always called them jacks or jackfish). You know the fish are huge when you have to hang them from a large branch in order to display them.

On rare occasions, we'd catch a Jack or two if we fished deep in the cold waters of the old river. It was ages before I learned that a 'Jack' was a Pike; tasty, but possessing a mouth full of teeth to reckon with!

Those fish were always so much fun to catch! They are fighters, for sure, and put up a lengthy battle against being reeled in. We sometimes breaded and fried them up delicious with walleyes, but the extended family mostly enjoyed pickling chunks of fillets in quart jars. Lots of 'Y' bones to clean! Slimy! About twice per season some family member would get all cut up on their teeth, monsters that they are.

Is your description referring to the legendary lutefisk dinner item ( yes I might have misspelled!), so often referred to by the Oracle of MN; aka Old Owl Face - famous leader of legions of the Order of Clapping Seals?
Ours were in the 3 lb range. Cant imagine hooking a really fine specimen.
