I nearly shot the poly-choke off the Sportsman 48 last Saturday, poor thing. Look at how dangerous it is, luckily one of my shooting team noticed it and said not to shoot my 2nd shot.

OUCH! Firing the next shot probably wouldn't have done anything, but "probably" is not good enough when it comes to guns.

Yeah, the not-knowing was too scary for me. We did snap the end off and I shot it for the rest of that round, it improved my clay target hits twofold. It was an Elmer Fudd gun after that. BLAM!

You should have left it on, it would have been just the job for shooting round corners

You turned it into an open choke. Wider pattern is great for clays.

I hit ten more clays after that happened, 18/50 isn't too bad for me after a couple of years of no 12ga. shooting at all. Ha! It looked like one of those wicked door breaching muzzle brakes that can be found on ARs and things. It's all filed down now and looks fairly normal, not sure what to do to fix that. I will probably shoot the Hello Kitty Beretta Extrema 2 tomorrow, and only shoot one round of 50, too, my shoulders get sore when I shoot two rounds of 50 in one day!
I am going to miss that poly-choke, those are really nice. I haven't been able to find one around here, and the Sportsman 48 is an excellent shotgun for me that has gotten me my best scores. Hello Kitty is probably not even broken in yet, she hasn't had more than 300 rounds through her yet. Today I realized how nice and light Hello Kitty is, I may do better now that I'm further away from my spinal fusion and have lost my flinch.

Hello Kitty is just the nickname, it's a Beretta Extrema 2 12 gauge, it's gentle for a gal that has had spinal fusion. Not terribly pretty, just weather-resistant grey.

Score!! I found a Sportsman '48 at a gun shop today, really nice condition and 10% off with a nice poly-choke. I snapped it right up, but of course the gov't can't possibly keep their phone system in working order to run the background check, so I had to leave it. It's an hour or more away from my house too, so I'll have to make that trip later this week when the gov't feels like working, holy cow that's irritating.
I like the shorter barrel on the '48 and the barrel & bolt recoil operation better than other semi-autos, I can't get good scores with any other 12ga. I've tried. I am both thrilled and ticked off at the government!

Happy Shotgun!!! Here's the new old shotgun!! The grain on the stock, it's one of the prettier wood grain patterns I have. Still no clue what happened with NICS yesterday, the salesman said it was still out of order when he left at 6:00 last night. Attachment Deleted

Nice looking shotgun, Pinecone; esp if considering it's been almost 5 Decades, Two-score & ten, 50 years(!), since that could have hit the field. Hell, that shotgun is prob a sight OLDER than you are, and young enough for this gnarly fellow to be envious of its glossy glow and unmarred finish.
Is it the lenght of pull or relative short barrel that makes you a fan?

Thank you very much. It was a steal for $200, I think. I saw a really beaten-up model for $395 at a gun show, probably worn out. There were fewer than 500,000 of these made, I am told.
I like the short barrel, I am short and I like to sight in pretty fast. All of the older fellows at my range (the ones that need a golf cart to go from station to station) use coach guns and shorter SxS shotguns, fancy ones! I don't need fancy, I need function. I got my best score in sporting clays with one of these, I need to top it now!

I too, appreciate the 'coach-gun'. Not for shattering skeets, but its short barrels and concise dimensions make it an attractive alternative to my AR-clone. One rests by my bed every evening.
