I've noticed that the "New" button doesn't always take me to the last page of a thread. It appears to be related to how many pages are in the thread. Single page threads and those with only 2 or 3 pages, clicking "New" button on the thread title will take me to the latest entry since I looked last. If there are very many pages (more than 4???) it takes me to the opening post for the thread.
I'm running on my backup computer, still. XP, PaleMoon browser (think firefox) everything updated to latest.

'Tis annoying. Does it to me, too. But I, too, run XP and Firefox.

I gave up a while back and use the 'Recent Posts' tab exclusively.
