I found an old SxS shotgun that got my interest. Not shootable (Damascus barrels, broken stock). I'm thinking of building a duplicate from more modern materials. I'll try to post pics after I move. What turned me on was the length of the barrels. 26 or 28 inches. That's gonna be fun. 😉

I'm always looking for something like that at gun shows, a wall-hanger type of long gun that I can turn into a lamp, but around here they still want a few hundred bucks for everything even if it's broken.

This one was about $150. Can't wait to get started.

Settled pretty much. Can't work on the gun with every place closed. Aargh!

Wish I could have got stuff over to you, I handled an estate sale a while back and got rid of 60 shotguns some a bit rough but passed them on for under $100 kiwi

Still haven't got to it. Decided to do thorough cleanings on my other guns. Good thing. My Sears single shot 20 gauge hasn't been apart since I got it. 1969, I think. What's a good thing to use to refinish the stock?

I've used True Oil with good results.

I second that, I used Tru Oil on a banjo clock as well as my old shotgun stock with beautiful results, I really prefer linseed oil based finish now.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking linseed oil but wasn't sure. Just looked up Tru oil. Think I'll get some.

Another question for those who know more than I. How do you tell if your shotgun has Damascus barrel or not? And when did they stop using them?

Damascus steel will show seams where the segments were fused together. Some shotguns from a little later in that era will say fluid steel and will not show the seams.

Thanks, JW. It's my Sears 20ga. that I'm concerned about.
