I had built a 308 Win on this action a while back. I played around with it for a while and couldn't get it to group consistently. I had gotten the barrel off ebay used with a supposed low round count. I had since built a Large ring Mauser in 30-06 that is very accurate and the 30-06 will do anything a 308 will. I got a new 6.5 X55 large ring Green Mountain barrel a while back and I've been wanting another Mauser sporter in 6.5X55 so I pulled the 308 barrel and installed, finish reamed, and head spaced the Swede. Still need to blue the barrel . The barreled action will fit perfectly in the Boyds thumbhole laminate that the 308 was in and the receiver is drilled and tapped already and The bolt was already modified so all the hard work is done. It took me an hour and a half to finish ream the chamber. That was kind of tedious. Hope to get this completed soon !!

Actually, if you reload, the 30-06 will do more than the .308. The 06 powder range is wider and the 06 will reliably and accurately shoot from 110 gr to 220 gr bullets and will be more accurate with flat base bullets as well as boat-tailed bullets. The .308 doesn't like bullets lighter than 150 gr and REALLY dislikes ones above 180 gr.

I've already loaded some 125 gr bullets for the 30-06 and they grouped really well !!

. A couple more pics. The program won't let me load the others. I used Van's Instant Gun Blue on the barrel and to touch up the receiver . I think Vans is the best cold blue I've used , and I've used most of them !! I mounted a Nikon 3X9 scope on it. Can't wait to take it out back and try it out !

I didn't see a lot of difference between boat tail and flat base in the lighter bullets for the 30-06. Above 150, though, there is a marked improvement in accuracy and wind resistance with the boat tailed ones.
Unfortunately, I've lost all my reloading recipes over the years. I remember only my competition and hunting load. Sierra 180 gr boat tail, 54.5 gr IMR 4350, Winchester primer, neck sized and trimmed brass.

Got a chance to try it yesterday out back. Fired a couple fouling shots and then three more into a 3/4 inch group @90 yds using some handloads with Speer 120 gr soft points and IMR4895 .Still need to get the scope dialed in for zero. Also going to work up a load with some Hornady 129 grain SSTs. I think this ones a keeper.

I use cold blue quite a bit. Once you get the hang of it its quite effective.
