I thought of this when I saw Shooter's advice about chopping the double.
Lovejoy is an English book series, which was made into an English TV series. Lovejoy (has no first name, and does not like to be called "Mister") is an antiques dealer, and a bit of a con man. While in some years of the show he was dressed "decently", in a couple of years he went around in a leather motorcycle jacket.
So this one episode, a guy wearing a biker jacket, a helmet with a tinted full-face shield, and carrying a sawed-off SxS goes into a fish-n-chips place. Fires a round into the ceiling. "Give me the money!". The guy behind the counter looks sort of stunned, because this isn't something that happens every day, so the first guy yells, "NOW!", and fires a second round up.
The guy behind the counter, who is fairly large and muscular-looking, says, "Your gun's empty, mate", and starts around the end. The would-be robber drops the gun to the floor and rabbits.
Since all guns in England are registered, it was a simple matter for the police to determine that it belonged to Lovejoy, who was the right height and build of the robber, plus, he always wore a leather jacket. Case closed. Off to the pub for a lukewarm one.
Was sort of shocking, to me, when the two cops descended on him, saying, "Armed police...". "Armed police"? Aren't all police armed?
Guess not.
Anywho, it turns out the gun was Lovejoy's retirement. A Holland and Holland Best Grade. He could not make the cops understand. "Why would I take a gun worth 300,000 pounds, saw the barrels off, making it valueless, and use it to knock over a fish-n-chips place that might have twenty quid?"
It was a frameup, of course, and it turned out okay in the end. But the thought of that poor gun.
