Yesterday I traded my old beat up 9mm M4 for a Mossberg Patrol in .308. The dealer, who I am friends with did a one for one, which I thought very fair. Just got bored with the limitations of the M4. I mean 9mm even out of a carbine is modest.... Now .308 out of a 16.5" barrel is going to be exciting. I also picked up a used scope he had in stock, its a Minox which I am not familiar with but he said was good quality glass. It has a German No 4, which is one of my favourite reticles. Not so popular today.

Minox. They been making them little spy cameras since 1922. Also make binoculars and riflescopes.

Changed the Minox for a Leupold. I think the Minox was better quality, in fact sure of it. Retail is almost double but the German No 4 reticle wasnt quite hoe I liked it. The 3,6 and 9 were thick but went thin early, leaving a large area with very thin lines. Easily lost against a busy background. The Leupold Pig Plex seemed better suited to a broader application. Also, the dealer could get me one for half the new list price. Again, not sure how but i will take it. The rifles in, but I need to wait for my licence to be varied. A bit like your waiting period. Anyway, as soon as its sorted I am picking it up, a few hundered rounds and off to the range. Hope I am not disappointed....
Got to decide the best distance to zero the .308 to achieve the best possible placement out to say 500. I have run several .308s and 7.62s before, but the short barrel will effect MV and thus trajectory....

Pops, I don't think he'll be able to get the bolt closed on that load.

That is true, but in the 150 to 180 grain bullet range, the .308 and the 30-06 use the same reloading formulae. The 30-06 can be loaded successfully with a much wider range of bullet weights and shapes and hold accuracy and effect well. The .308 is much more limited in the range of loads that work well.

Good news, I am far from fussy. Brought up and educated to keep things simple, especially with firearms. 4" high at 400 sounds practical, but whats the zero distance on that?

Keep in mind that many .308 rifles tend to like the 168ish gr bullets better. You will want to stick to the boat tailed bullets in any brand.

Picked up a Leupold pig plex hog scope. Like a German No4 but with hold off marks for 3, 4 and 500 yds. Advice is to zero at 50. Nice scope, Leupold is a great make and I really like the No4 type reticle. Always did. 1" tube and not the fire dot, that would be more money and I am not sure worth the extra.
