I recently picked up a M77 in 22-250 with 6.5X24 Burris scope I want to use for Prairie dog shooting. I traveled to SW Wyo last week to visit my son and family and took my two gunsmiths from the range I owned and needless to say they were absolutely thrilled at the PD availability and the shooting conditions. BUT!!! I used the Ruger for the first time and I am REALLY disappointed. The action is so rough when opening and closing the bolt, it feels like it is rubbing along or in and out of a bastard file. I have never had a rifle and that includes other M77 rifles in different calibers that are anything like this one. It is also very difficult to pick up a round a feed it smoothly into the chamber. It begins and then locks up about half way. I have to stop, ease the bolt back a little and then force it closed. I can see the round actually ease up a tiny bit on the flower in the mag when I do this and then close the bolt. It does it with nearly every round. Has anyone else had this experience with a Ruger, and of so what did you do to fix it? I am thinking about returning it to Ruger even though I am not the original buyer. I don't think the guy had used the gun much, if at all

When Bill was alive, they'd have fixed it. No questions, no problem, and no charge.
Don't know what their policy is now that the old man's dead.
Another problem could be the model. Seems to me that they did a major redesign of the 77 some years back. I know my brother's gun (bought late 70s/early 80s) was heavy and clunky compared to the one I owned, briefly, in '98 (257 Roberts too long for 308-length action so they put it in 30/06-length. too long for my taste).
If you have one of the older model, they might no longer stock parts to work on it.
