It would very interesting to know history of owner. I find it hard to believe he would just go off and leave the rifle unless it was under dire circumstances.

I've known people that found guns in the woods. Around here they are rusted all to hell (not perfectly preserved by a dry desert climate). Lean you gun up against a tree to go see a man about a dog, and when you're finished you can't find the tree. Oops.
It being empty - THAT were a puzzler to me. Who carries an empty gun in the woods?
And that cartridge in the trap? I know people that hunt with military guns (Springfield, Garand, SKS) that keep a spare round or two in the trap, but they pack it, with a hankerchief or Kleenex or something, so it don't rattle around.
Buuut, maybe that stock was packed with therapeutic papers, and they disintegrated over time.
