Made by Hans Stopler, in Nuremberg, in 1597. Eight shot, but no idea of the caliber.

Looking at those yellow things, on the outside of the cylinder, with the silver knobs. It looks like they slide. Wonder if they cover the flashole?
I also see where some sick sadistic bastard has had himself a fine time with an electro-pencil.

Yes Alpo, I am sure those covers slide to expose a pan with fine powder inside. If it didn't have them the powder would fall out of the lower chambers. I could be wrong but suspect there is no hammer/ cylinder turning mechanism. You probably had to turn the cylinder for each shot by hand.
There were many 'revolvers' that pre date colts, by a long way. Col Colt said he had the idea for a revolving cylinder while a shop hand sailing to London. More likely while in London he visited the Royal Armouries in the Tower where several would be on display.
On a related but different subject last weekend I met a guy I know who is one of the worlds leading experts on Colt. He told me he was quite the character and while in a top hotel on one occasion had pissing contests from the balcony.
