Amazing. Wood hates me. I am great with metal, but when I look at a piece of wood, it splits. Against the grain.

Great job JR, I love the details like the banding on the legs, first rate job Yes it is a labor of love. It's the kind of thing that happens when hard work, skill, and attention to detail come together.

Amazing. Wood hates me. I am great with metal, but when I look at a piece of wood, it splits. Against the grain. I was fortunate to have a father who was an accomplished cabinet-maker to walk me through my 1st projects . First, draw up plans, second source the tools and materials , third measure all cuts at least 2 times if not more, and last use lots of glue and screws and a square when assembling. This assumes you have some knowledge of safely using power tools. I enjoy working with wood when I have the time and the energy. I never work on projects like this when tired. JR

I envy your experiance with your father, I was unable to benefit from anything similar. Despite this I was stripping vehicle engines in my early teens, then guns, then anything mechanical I could get my hands on. I always remember the words of my mentor as he hammered a piece with great force. 'I shall make it fit'. Wise words for the skilled mechanical engineer.

:thumbsup:My dad also taught me to work on my own cars- tune-ups, oil changes, Brakes, carb rebuilds, etc. Even pulled heads for valve jobs. Todays engines are just too complex now but I turned many a wrench "back in the day ". I have a hard time relating to guys who have no mechanical aptitude !! JR

Yes, modern cars are far too complex. Having said that they dont seem to break down nearly as much.
Also yes about those with no mechanical ability. There is a pleasure in running an engine you put back together yourself, or fixing other bits with imagination and creativity. Why I was under my Vitara last week fixing the exhaust with bendy wire and a huge jubelee clip. Who needs a new one?
