Dog gone, I'm glad I don't have one.

Believe it or not, no cell service here at the ranch and it's GREAT! Depending on which direction I'm going, I either have to drive 15 miles in one direction or 50 miles in the other to get a cell signal. People have forgotten how to talk to each other. Years ago I was working a Cowboy Poetry event and cowboy poet, Waddie Mitchell, was talking about how cowboy poetry got started. He explained how when he was younger and working on a ranch in eastern Nevada in the middle of nowhere, that they didn't have electricity, so there was no television, and "darned poor radio." He went on to say that the ranch hands did the "strangest thing at night" to entertain themselves. You could hear a pin drop in anticipation from the crowd not knowing what he was going to say next... "We talked to each other!"A while back, I received a text from a buddy of mine that I hadn't seen in several months. I was in town and close to his business, so I just dropped on by. He said, "You didn't have to come by LT! You could have just texted me!" I said, "I hadn't seen you in a while so I thought I'd stop by and say HOWDY in person!" One of the worst whippin's I got growing up is when I got caught playing on the, "party line." HA! It's a heart breaker for sure that America has become so hypnotized by the little glowing rectangle that cordiality and conversation and stillness have become a thing of the past for so many.

Probably why we are here, most everyone else is infected with instant news. One big wake-up for me was watching a person I know being so totally dependent on GPS. Hubby and I moved out of Seattle five years ago, only about 65 miles away. A friend who lives in a suburb of Seattle started regularly coming to visit and do some work for us. After maybe ten visits, I realized that she was still dependent on GPS to make the trip. It's a trip that I had memorized after doing it twice. The glowing rectangle is making people DUMBER by the minute!
My apologies to anyone here who uses their GPS, because I know y'all are intelligent folks not likely to abdicate your independence to these tools, which are supplanting actual human intelligence for a sad majority of Americans. I mean, they must be thinking, "Why do I need to work so hard to be smart and capable when I have this device to do it for me?"
Rant over. Thanks for listening.

I observe people. I would be coaching a 10 and under Baseball game, glance in the stands after a great play by us and 30+ 'fans' would be looking down at their dadgum machines. Sometimes a kid only makes 2-3 good plays all season, and Mom or Dad missed it. No replays in real life!!!

How much of actual life do people miss because their faces are glued to little screens and why don't they care?

I can't stand the tiny screens. My phone is a flip. I use a lap top for computer stuff. Plus my fingers are crooked so those tiny keys are hard to manage and I detest using my finger on the screen. I much prefer a mouse. I like multiple windows too.

I still have a flip phone. I hate it when people text me as I don't do texting. My sisters text me all the time so I call them back. I'm always telling them either phone or e-mail me but they forget and do it anyway. Drives me crazy ! I guess just a 72 year old dynosaur !!

Texting is talking TO someone, a conversation is talking WITH someone. The only advantage of texting is there is a journal of the message.

Yes, because it's documented in 'writing' and it's not, Hearsay. I, unfortunately, carry two phones. One for work and my personal phone. I don't want my personal phone being discoverable for the defense with my family contacts on it. One of the problems with either email or texting, is that when the sender hits "send," they think that their job is over because they hit SEND. That and, "I sent you an email 15 minutes ago and you didn't respond." If it's that danged important, see me or call and SPEAK to me.

I takes too long to 'talk'. I talk faster with my mouth, than my fingers.
