I have been looking for a new purse and I have to say, I'd never carry a gun in a purse. There are plenty of models available now, but they seem to be covered in the usual bling. Look at the silly little metal dangly zipper thing here: I have my doubts that anyone could unpack that little gun in a time of need and not get tangled up in shiny metal doohickeys. It doesn't even seem like a cool idea to have a separate compartment with a holster in a purse, even though it's better than just throwing a gun in a purse with pocket change, keys, chapstick, with no holster at all. Purses are easy to steal. I'm always happy to show other women my carry system, with my revolver firmly situated at my side in my belly band. It's always right where I need it, in the same position, and I don't have to wonder where my purse is at any given time.

As a general rule, I think "off-body carry" is pretty dumb. But, if it's a formal affair, I can probably hide one in my tux, but you in a little black cocktail dress - the clutch seems to be the only possibility.

I used to wear little black dresses. Now I wear a skirt and a top and a revolver.
It's quite awkward when I'm in a situation where people want to hug me though, my right hand is always grabbing their hand and moving it up my back rather than around my waist. Men tend to go for the waist hug.

When carrying a gun, and go into a "hug situation", always get your arms in there first, and hug around their chest, under their arms. That forces them to hug you around the shoulders/neck. That protects guns from the shoulder holster to the pocket holster, and anywhere in between.
You, being (I'm gonna assume) shorter than the average guy, should be good at this. Me, being taller than the average woman, learned early to "bend and hug".

Indeed, I am shrinking and only 5'3" tall now. Most of the time it's pretty easy, but every so-often somebody gets grabby. My aunt's creepy husband is like that, he's a groper. A lot of times men seem to want their hands right on my waist, and that's right where the firearm lives. *Sigh*

Mom was a flapper, to the day she died. On evening, back in the late 40s, she and Dad were over in Las Vegas with friends, dining and dancing. She was out on the floor jitterbugging with the other fellow when the strap on her thigh holster broke and her Browning went skittering across the floor. The fellow scooped it up and continued dancing with her through the rest of the number. He then escorted her back to their table and, after seating her, laid the gun and holster on the table in front of her. As he sat down, he said "You should carry that in your purse, like most ladies do." That was our local United States Marshall. Pops

I like Minnesota's concealed carry guidelines, we can carry as many firearms as we want. Concealing them all is the difficult part!

We have always been open carry here, but people always panic and call the authorities if they see one, so it doesn't work all that well. Nobody sees my firearms unless I'm at the range, but they'd see at least one if they tried to kill me.

We don't have open carry. We were trying for it, but Nuevo York del Sud killed it. But at least, now, if you are reaching for something on the top shelf, and your gun is exposed, you can't be arrested.
Last year you coulda been.

Oh, they're nice purses, I just wouldn't carry one for lots of reasons. Part of it is the weight, obviously, I can't carry anything on my shoulders since I had my spine fused. Purses get stolen. The deeper concealment of carrying right in front of my hip on my strong side works really well and I don't have to wonder where my purse is all the time (I don't always carry one, I put my wallet in my pocket). When my nieces were little, they used to look for gum and candy in every purse that was unattended.

Guns in purses or bags? Bags and purses get grabbed by bad guys. I once tried to stop a bag grabber, woman holding strap, punk holding bag. Punk pulled knife and cut strap and ran. A gun in the bag would have done no one any use. As for hugging? Does it matter if they feel the gun? If your up to hugging I doubt they are going to be a grabber....
I know its tougher for a women, but I think carry should allways be on the body....
Re open carry, will I ever forget being with some guys in AZ and I asked to stop by a Bank, to pick up some cash. I asked one to throw me a jacket to cover the 1911 and mags. He was LE and told me to cover it would be an offence, just walk into the bank like that. The first time I ever walked into a bank, as a customer with a 1911 in my hip. Now for a London lad, that was an experience.

It took me about four years to get used to carrying inside the bank, even though my firearm is concealed! It felt really wrong, but I always tell myself that there is no guard posted at any of these banks, and there is no city police force in my city, only county support. If there were trouble while I was in that building, I'd only have myself to rely upon for staying alive, like so many other places.
